Build Your Own Training Team!

Dear Instructor Candidate:

We are pleased to include you in our upcoming American Red Cross Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor course. This instructor course consists of a pre-course session and practice teaching sessions. The schedule is as follows and includes the required basic training sessions:

Class Schedule:

The instructor course begins with a precourse session that is designed to evaluate your first aid, CPR and AED skills and knowledge.  You must pass the precourse written exam with a score of at least 80 percent on each of the components to continue in the instructor course.

Session1:           Before Providing - First Aid/Bloodborne Pathogens Training

Adult & Child CPR/AED plus Infant CPR

You are expected to be able to successfully demonstrate the following skills without coaching:

  •         Removing Disposable Gloves

  •         Checking a Conscious Adult, Child or Infant

  •         Checking an Unconscious Adult, Child and Infant

  •         Conscious Choking-Adult or Child and Infant

To teach American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED courses for lay responders, you must be completely familiar with the instructor’s manual, DVDs and participant’s materials for the programs you intend to teach.  After you successfully complete the precourse session, you will be assigned readings from it as homework.   You should bring to each session your copies of the appropriate participant’s materials, the instructor’s manual and the American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor Training Participant’s Manual.

Completing the basic class training sessions will give you the training knowledge and confidence to complete and pass the pre-course session during the first section of your instructor process.

At the end of the first session, you will be given practice-teaching assignments to prepare for the next sessions.  These assignments will give you experience in presenting information to course participants, using audiovisual equipment, conducting skill sessions and evaluating skill performance.  An authorized instructor trainer will evaluate you during your practice-teaching assignments.

Session 2:                  Instructor Course

Session 3:                  Instructor Course

Session 4:                  Instructor Course

At the end of the course, you will also take a final written exam covering information that is taught in the course and is in the instructor’s manual.  To receive certification as a Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED instructor, you must attend all sessions, actively participate in course activities, including practice-teaching assignments, and score at least 80 percent on the final written exam (20 correct out of 25 questions).
